The Birds Are Back at the Roost!

Martins began returning to the roost at the old Manns Harbor Bridge in mid-June. We expect the Department of Transportation to open the flashing lights and 20 mph speed limit signs any day now.

Come see us Thursday evenings for our annual Purple Martin Madness sessions.

New this year is the Betty Dean “BeBop” Fearing fishing pier and observation platform. In its formative years, the Society received help from the Defenders of Wildlife to make the first design of this pier. It’s a smart and safe location for watching the birds.

The Outer Banks is home to one of the largest purple martin roosts in
the eastern US. The wildlife refuge lands and water systems surrounding it
support this spectacular roost of migratory birds. Come see 100,000 martins
in flight over Croatan Sound and learn more about the fascinating lives of
these birds and why they roost here. Co-sponsored by Alligator River NWR.
Meet at the new parking lot at the western end of the "Old Manns Harbor"/US
64 bridge near the martin house and informational kiosk. Bring bug repellant
and binoculars (binocs or scope are not necessary but will enhance your
experience). Info for the 2010 season is coming soon!
